Samaritan Feeds The HungryThe Samaritan Insurance Program continued to “Live the Business” withcommunity outreach by sponsoring a ham and cabbage dinner in conjunction withSt. Patrick's Day at the St. Francis Inn, a soup kitchen located in theKensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.Samaritan provided 100 pounds of potatoes, 50 pounds of carrots, 60 pounds ofham and 20 heads of cabbage. Samaritan employees also assisted in preparing andserving the meal. The end result was a 60-gallon vat of ham and cabbage stewthat fed more than 200 people that included children, families, the elderly andothers in need.
Sponsoring and participating in this meal is consistent with Samaritan'scorporate philosophy to Live the Business, according to Patrick Bethel,underwriting manager for the Samaritan Insurance Program. Samaritan supportssocial service organizations both financially and through volunteer efforts.
“As we assist organizations in carrying out their missions, we also learnmore about the operations and challenges social service organizations facedaily,” Bethel said. “Hopefully, the knowledge we gain from working closelywith social service groups will enable us to develop better products andservices for the social service community.”
Other efforts Samaritan has undertaken to support social service groupsinclude volunteering time at the Special Olympics and donating used computers toOperation Rebuild.com, a nonprofit organization that refurbishes used computersand places them in the homes of low-income people with disabilities.
The St. Francis Inn was established in 1979 to serve the needs of the poor,homeless, alienated and forgotten in Philadelphia. It is operated by FranciscanFriars, Religious sisters and Franciscan lay volunteers who live in theneighborhood among the people they have dedicated their lives to serve.
